The Mental Game of Success: Turning Written Goals into Reality

Shonteral Lakay Redmond, DDS Season 2 Episode 14

Send us a text

Dr. Shon reveals her groundbreaking "Consistency Project" – a daily experiment testing whether she can show up on Twitch for 365 consecutive days to build a global community of motivated dreamers. This raw, energetic stream dives deep into the struggle many of us face with consistency, especially those coming from underserved communities where self-help concepts aren't readily taught.

Drawing inspiration from Brian Tracy's "Eat That Frog," Dr. Shon breaks down why action is the essential ingredient for success and how developing positive habits through decision, discipline, and determination can transform your life. The conversation explores the power of writing down clear goals – a practice only 3% of adults maintain despite being 5-10 times more likely to achieve success when they do.

What makes this stream particularly powerful is Dr. Shon's authentic perspective on elevating from "Hood to Hooded." Beyond the academic achievement this phrase literally represents in her life, she shares how it symbolizes a mental shift available to anyone seeking growth. With refreshing honesty, she acknowledges that even with multiple degrees, consistency remains her greatest challenge.

The most compelling moments come when Dr. Shon speaks directly to young people contemplating giving up on their dreams. Her passionate reminder that "life is too tough already for us to give up at any age" serves as both warning and inspiration. Through personal stories of battling depression while establishing her dental practice, she demonstrates that showing up for yourself daily – even when you're the only one watching – is how true transformation begins.

Speaker 1:

What's going on?

Speaker 2:

Dr Sean is all the way live. Dr Sean is all the way live. Ay, we all the way live, ay, we all the way live. Turn up if you all the way live, all the way live, all the way live.

Speaker 1:

So welcome back to the broadcast. This is Dr Sean TV. Dr Cheetah's Sunflower back with another live and baby, baby. We are on day five. One, two, three, four, five, dr Shawn's consistency project. You're probably like what is that? If you don't know what that is, because I only started it five days ago, so you probably don't know. So I'm here to let you know.

Speaker 1:

At the beginning of this project I decided to do Saturdays as a multi stream to multiple platforms, versus just to twitch. All the other days I am live exclusively on twitch. So make sure you click that link and follow me on twitch. If you are not, and if you can't sign up for twitch or if it's too much, you don't feel like doing all that, you can catch the replays with all of the highlights of these live videos on my podcast, Hood to Hooded, which is on all digital platforms, especially Spotify. So I just had to let y'all know that little information to start.

Speaker 1:

But today is day five of the Consistency Project project. Yes, shout out to me for showing up. If you don't know what the consistency project is, it's something that I started five days ago and it's an it's. It's an experiment to test my consistency, to see if I can be consistent on Twitch and show up every day for 365 days for at least one hour, that I can build a global community that is positive, motivated to accomplish their goals and pursue their dreams unapologetically. That has increased oral health, intelligence and that's just fucking lit. Period Lit. That is my goal Just to connect with people from around the world, be my true, authentic self, not holding nothing back, and just to share who I am and just to share positivity to everyone. I realize that the one thing that I lack on a lot is consistency. And despite how many degrees you have, despite how much information you have, despite you are your age, if you don't have consistency, a lot of things can be out of whack for you. You know what I mean. So that's when I decided to start the Consistency Project.

Speaker 1:

I love streaming. I love being a dentist too, but I love going live. Even in dental school I was live. Even at my dental school graduation I was live, if you know, you know. So I was live. I crossed the stage. I had to put my camera down then, but I should have took it with me, but I just always love streaming.

Speaker 1:

Somewhere down the line I kind of trickled off and lost the consistency, and dentistry just took over my whole entire life, and sometimes I stream, but now I want to do it consistently and truly build my audience, because I'll build an audience, get burnt out by work, disappear for a couple weeks or months or then disappear off of social media. So I want to change that and really connect and build a global audience. That's my goal. So this consistency project is me showing up every day for one hour a day on Twitch, though On Saturdays I do come on other platforms.

Speaker 1:

I decided that we would do reviews of books that I think can help us grow, especially if you're like me. You want to do the consistency project. That means that you pick one goal that you really have been avoiding or procrastinating with and commit to doing it for 165 days every day. It could be a workout goal. It could be flossing your teeth, because you always push the floss for the teeth as the easiest goal to do that people don't want to do because it's only two minutes out of your 24 hours a day.

Speaker 1:

But you ain't got to do that. But you do an easy goal like that. But if you really have something that has been heavy on your heart to do and you just been procrastinating, now is the time for you to jump onto the consistency project 365 days. I started five days ago. I've been consistent, showing up every day for my audience, which has been me for most of the time. It's just been me.

Speaker 1:

But this is what hood to hood it is about. This is what starting from the bottom is about. It's about showing up even when you're the only person in the room. You gotta feel yourself like that before other people feel you, before other people can. It's your greatness. You gotta feel that greatness from inside so they can see it. If you don't feel it, they can't see it on the inside and you cannot fake it. So you gotta believe it, feel it. Wake up every day, super lit period. You gotta wake up every day, so lit and everything that you do. Don't hold nothing back. Be unapologetic, don't let nobody judge you, don't let nobody trick you out your spot. Just be on top of your game.

Speaker 1:

Yesterday we went over a book I read called still like artists. This book right here about enhancing your creativity and how to be your true, authentic self, but also just learning from other people and staying in environments that cater to the greatness in you and that wake up that creative person that lives in you and that allows you to just do things and be more and put out nothing but wonderful things into the environment, into the world, into the internet. You know, just talks about being creative and not letting anything hold you back. So that was a good book. I read this yesterday and one day. So easy read, right here, still like an artist, easy read, and we talked about that yesterday, so we ain't gonna talk about that again today.

Speaker 1:

So I'm gonna take this down today, I started reading this book eat that frog by brian tracy. Now, brian tracy is one of the best self-help gurus. I started listening to his like podcasts and videos on youtube while I was in dental school, like towards the end, because I realized that self-help is something that we lack in the hood. It's something that we lack in underserved communities, because we don't even know that we need it. I hear I was in dental school about to be done and still lacking the self-help. That is even more prevalent if you don't grow up with your parents in the home. You know, my grandparents were my primary caregivers and they was working. They weren't thinking about teaching me, about reading a book, like. They got to feed you, clothe you like, do stuff like that. It's stressful. This is not in the hood, they're not telling you this. So I didn't realize that self-help was an area that I truly lacked until I got in my early 30s. Okay, eat that frog. We're not gonna go deep into this book, but I just want to give you a little mental soul food for tonight.

Speaker 1:

It's talking about how you achieve success, and you cannot have success without one key word, which which is action. Action is the breeding ground for you to be successful in anything that you do. So you want to be selective with your task and tackle the major tasks first. This is called being action oriented or action orientation, he says. And you want to avoid a failure to execute. Many of us procrastinate. We say we're going to start tomorrow. We say we're going to start, you know, the next day, because we just don't feel like doing it today. We get into a habit of failing to execute the things that we want and we don't take action. Yes, we can motivate you, yes, we can inspire you, but if you don't take action, then your goals will be inhibited. And a habit is something that you do, automatic and easy. So habits can be positive or they can be negative towards your life.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to get into bad habits. We want to keep our habits positive. We want to make sure that we're completing tasks with enthusiasm, energy, and this is going to boost our self-esteem and release endorphins anytime you complete a task that you've been avoiding or procrastinating about. That can really enhance your life. It's going to make you more personable, more creative and confident. That's like flossing every day. If you floss every day, like the people who floss every day, they come into the dentist's office confident, like they just know they're super lit. They just know this because they complete this task every single day. And that's just a small task.

Speaker 1:

Imagine those things that you could do that you've been avoiding, that you could do today, but you always push it off, such as working out. I'm guilty of working out. I'm guilty of that. I'm guilty of avoiding the workout. That's one habit that I really need to develop, which is why I'm practicing consistency, showing up for a whole year. I think I can do it. Anytime you put your mind to something, you can do it. So you want to create positive addiction to positive habits. This will help you release endorphins.

Speaker 1:

Now, in this book, he mentioned this little funny story about a man that is in New York City and he stops this musician in New York City and he asked the musician how do you get to Carnegie Hall? And the man replied practice, man, practice. Basically, that's saying, the key to mastering any skill is to practice, just like dentistry. In order to get better at dentistry, we practice. That's why it's called a dental practice. Even if you go and specialize, you're still always, for the life of being a dentist, you're practicing this means you have to always work on your skill, learn new things and don't get stale.

Speaker 1:

I feel like so many people, especially coming from the hood, so many people get stale and they get stuck on that one little part. That's why it's called hood to hooded, because we want to go to a different mindset. We want to elevate our mindset past, you know, just this basic level, because there's so much more we can know and grow and learn and be. Then goes on to talk about the three D's of habit formation. Now y'all know well you probably don't know if you haven't been listening to the podcast but my formula is consistency plus discipline, minus procrastination equals a glow up or a flow. That's my formula, the CDP formula. He says there are three Ds in habit formation, that is, a decision, discipline and determination. So anytime you make a decision, you want to make sure that you make a decision that's getting you closer to your goals and to make this a habit. Then he says you want to visualize success, to accelerate progress toward becoming highly productive, effective and efficient. So thinking continuously about the rewards and benefit of being action oriented, fast moving and focused. So that's just like me creating this consistency project. I know it sounds the lulu, but it's something that I really want to do.

Speaker 1:

I love streaming. Like, how many times am I going to say I love streaming but sometimes fear not knowing what to say, feeling like there's going to be no one in the room, learning how to just be comfortable with that and getting your message out and showing up every day. That's all you have to do is just show the up every single day, and that's the beginning of this book. It's talking about building that picture of yourself. How do you see yourself? Is there something that you could enhance or get better at right? How do you see yourself?

Speaker 1:

The first chapter of this book that was like the intro book, so it goes on to talk about setting the table. How do you set the table to avoid procrastination and to be better at knocking out your tasks and your goals and your dreams and everything that you want in life? We all need to have some type of goals for family, for business, personal goals, health goals, just having goals. The issue is I'm just speaking coming from the hood the issue is, when you don't have goals or clear goals, you go throughout life aimlessly or just doing whatever comes your way, or settling and living with regret and not feeling like doing what you want to do in life or living your best life so set the table for yourself, set the standard, he says, have clarity, clear goals and objectives without deviating.

Speaker 1:

So that's why this consistency project is so important to me. Of course, it helps to build, to show up I mean to the audience, but I want to prove it to myself, because this is something that I lack. This is something that I know that I like and this is something I would prefer to get better at. I want to show up every day, but what happens when you have a bad day? Set the table, be clear about your goals without deviating from that.

Speaker 1:

Procrastination, it says, is caused by vagueness, confusion and being fuzzy minded, like unwritten goals. I'll tell y'all this story when I wanted to become a dentist and get into dental school. The one tool that I use is what he's talking about in this book is having clarity. He says think on paper. Only three percent, only adults, have clear written goals. Are you one of those adults who has clear written goals? Are you one of those people who knows what they want, thinks about the future, doesn't play with their time, don't waste their time on foolishness? Are you one of those people who have clear written goals? Nine times out of ten, if you're pursuing something great, your business, some type of degree for me, dentistry, a doctoral degree. You got to write it down. You. There's no way you're gonna get into a doctoral program and you don't write your goals down, so that's a secret. If you are a procrastinator, which I have fallen into the habit of a little bit, it's because I'm not writing my stuff down as much. So I'm getting refreshed, refreshing my brain. That's why dentistry is a practice. Everything that you do you got to practice right. Clear, written goals. So people who have clear written goals are five to 10 times more likely to accomplish their goals.

Speaker 1:

I wanted to get into dental school and become a doctor and pursue this difficult program where only less than less than one percent of people make it in. Those goals have to be written clearly, with clarity. Baby, every semester I had a goal of a 4.0. I never got it. At Florida State University I never touched that 4.0 every semester. But imagine if I hadn't had that goal and just went in blindly, not knowing what I needed. Because I had that goal, at least I landed somewhere around there, but not there, you know. But prevent me from becoming a dentist. It didn't prevent me from becoming hood to hooded. It didn't stop that because I had clarity about what I wanted. Then he goes into the last part of this chapter and if you want to join me on reading this book, you can get it from Amazon for a couple bucks.

Speaker 1:

It's always good to refresh your brain on ways to inhibit procrastination, because procrastination serves no one. The seven part method is number one decide exactly what you want. Think about that. What do you want today, tonight, I want to accomplish my goal of completing the 365 day consistency project by showing up one hour every day on twitch, regardless, unapologetically, unapologetically, no days off. I can do it. I believe in myself. Like that. You gotta have that delulu belief in yourself. Like that. You got to have that delusional belief in yourself, like that.

Speaker 1:

Number two write it down. If it's not tangible, it's just a wish, it's a fantasy. Do you know people who just walk around and they want this and they want that, but they never write it down? Then it's just like something you wishing for. You're not really serious about it because you can't even see it. You can't even really bring it to life because you can't even take a couple minutes to write it down.

Speaker 1:

Number three set a deadline. A deadline creates urgency. We all have a natural tendency to procrastinate, regardless. All of us procrastinate about something. Number four make a list of everything you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal. This give you a visual, visual picture of the larger task at hand and increase your likelihood of completing it. So make a list of it all the things you have to do to complete your goal. Number five organize that. Listen to a plan, priority and sequence more effective than carrying gold around in your mind. Make a list and then take action immediately. Do something anything today.

Speaker 1:

In that chapter, I feel like we got a lot of jewels. We got a lot of information that we can lead off and work on and just continue to be great and at who we are. Consistency is that one skill? It seems so, but it's one of the hardest things for people to do. I see it every day with something such as flossing. It's one of the hardest things for patients to just do every day, even if I say, hey, you're brushing your teeth every day. Just brush and floss together. It's rocket science. People will sit on a social media application and stroll for six hours and your phone tell you your watch time or your screen time now. So we will stroll for six hours and we need our teeth 100 well, not 100 years from now. We need our teeth 20, 30 years from now. We we need to dedicate that little couple minutes to them.

Speaker 1:

But even a habit like that causes us to procrastinate, right or not? It definitely causes us to procrastinate. So we got to show up for ourself every single day. Go up for ourself every single day. So this is just me showing up, guys, I'm definitely towards my goals, like I'm a gold digger, as they say, g-o-a-l A gold digger. I always have been a gold digger, unapologetically a gold digger. You know, life is so short. Life is too short to be bottled up or not your authentic self or just setting time pass and wasting time. That's why I'm reading that book, because I don't want to get into the habit of procrastinating or being undisciplined or not taking action on my goals in dental school. You don't have a choice when you're working your way up to dental school. You just have that burning passion, that desire to just keep going, and you up late weekends, nights. Dental school is so crazy and I want to just keep that passion and that burning desire to be great and to show up for myself. I don't want life to weigh me down or make me feel defeated in no type of capacity.

Speaker 1:

Last year I was in a whole different space. Last year battling depression, battling feeling inadequate or all those feelings not really knowing who I was. Last year I was battling a lot, having a new practice and so many things going on in the world that impact your practice and just thinking that you're leaving an associate to be a practice owner and it's just a lot more work than you can even imagine. So sometimes that can burn you out. That can burn you out. Then I started learning about American history and being indigenous and I've just been growing immensely this past year. So now my spirit is so happy, I feel so alive. I don't feel anything but a will to continue growing and spreading positivity around the world. That's why I show up for an hour every day on twitch now, unapologetically, period.

Speaker 1:

I have a lot to say, especially about coming from the hood. I came from poverty, guys. I can't make this any more plain. I came from poverty and just to know and hear some of the things I hear today about underserved youth in poverty, about what's going on, how they quitting on their dreams, how they just giving up left and right. It disturbed me, I mean. So that's why I say you know what? I have a voice. I need to continue to use it.

Speaker 1:

I need to continue using my voice, especially to put out inspiration and let people know, even if it's hard, you can still make it. But you need the determination now you, you need, you need determination. You need a lot to make it out of the hood. It ain't easy and I want people to know it's not easy coming from nothing trying to make it into something and going through school programs and the competitiveness and the money, and you have relationships going on and you have a lot going on to make it out of the struggle. So it's not easy. I definitely know this for a fact. Regardless if it's easy or not, you still can make it. You got to make it up in your mind that you want to get from here to here. You want to elevate, you want to go from here to here.

Speaker 1:

It's a mental decision and if you never make that mental decision or that switch, you will count yourself out. It's all a mental game within yourself. It's a challenge within yourself. That's why this 365 day consistency project for me is an experiment that I have to prove to myself. Can I show up every single day for something? And if I can't, why? Why do I have this weakness? What is preventing me from showing up for myself, being great, and it doesn't have to be this goal. You can have any goal and just test yourself Can I show up for me or will I quit? Will I fall into procrastination? Will I be undisciplined? Will I lack determination? Will I make excuses? Because you know we stay out of excuse view when we trying to go from hood to hooded. And when I say hooded, yeah, I'm talking about hooded, like with the cap and gown, but I'm also talking about a hooded state of mind that anybody can have a hooded state of mind. Being hooded state of mind, that anybody can have a hooded state of mind, being hooded is about having wisdom. It's about having knowledge. It's about seeking knowledge. It's about waking up every day, knowing that you are wonderfully made, knowing that you the shit use my french. It's about waking up every day and being you. It's about waking up every day and looking at those challenges, looking at the issues you have and trying to work on it.

Speaker 1:

For me, consistency is an issue. It is an issue for me. I feel like, even if I have associate degree, bachelor's degree, master, all this stuff, if I'm not consistent, if I don't take action, if I don't continue to grow, I will be obsolete, and we don't want to be obsolete. We don't want to count ourselves out, we want to count ourselves in every single day. If you want to make it from hood to hooded, you got to count yourself in every single day. Yes, you will fall. Yes, you might not have all the things that you need the bells and whistles to start and do what you need to do, but use what you have.

Speaker 1:

When I started this stream, I'm like a perfectionist. That's just dentists. Dentists are perfectionists. We like to make teeth straight. We like to do as perfect as we possibly can. That's why it's always the practice. We always have to practice for the life of our career. It's never okay you're a perfect dentist, now you got. You just do dentistry. No, you always practicing. Any person who doing dentistry can always grow and learn or have to start from zero if you don't grow and learn. So we always practicing. So that's how we want to be every day, waking up with the drive to know how lit we are, how amazing we are and how we just can't quit on ourselves.

Speaker 1:

You got to fake it before you make it. You got to continue to fake it before you make it. You got to continue to practice it before you make it show up for yourself. So on day one, when I said I'm gonna show up, I showed up. I didn't even feel good that day, but I showed up. And when you show up, those endorphins get released. You feel so proud of yourself for accomplishing whatever goal you set for yourself. You feel so much better. You won't have everything you need on day one, and that's okay. That's why it's called hood to hood it, because when you come from the hood or you come from, when I say hood, this can be just like where you're starting at okay, versus the goal that you set for yourself. So it's just a metaphor too. It really means I came from the hood and became hooded. But it could also mean this is where I'm starting at and this is how far I made it, to an elevated state of mind, and that's what we want today. I want to just really make sure y'all realize that you can start with nothing. Whatever your goal is, you can start from scratch. Pen, paper, pen and a paper. All right, pen and a paper. The first 10 years of being a dentist is pretty tricky. It really is. It's a tricky process having a dental practice. Sometimes it can be stressful, but this is what showing up for yourself means when it's stressful, you just still show up, you, you still try to do it.

Speaker 1:

I know a lot of people, a lot of youth, who just giving up on their dreams. They just dropping out, they doing things and just thinking that it's going to be easy. The worst time for you to stop learning is when you are young. That's the worst time to stop learning, because that's the best time to learn. That's the best time to pursue your education and to cram as much information into your brain and figure out what career you want to do and what you like, what you don't like. Try this. It's not the time to be giving up. Life is too tough already for us to give up at any age, but especially when you are a young adult.

Speaker 1:

I need for the youth, for the 19, 20 year olds, the high schoolers, the middle schoolers. I need for y'all to take your life serious, and this is for anybody. Take your life serious. Don't play with your time, don't play with your mind. Just don't play with it. It's valuable. It's like more. It's worth more than gold. You know they say silver and gold. It's worth more than gold. A mine is a terrible thing to waste. It's a terrible thing to waste because sometimes you can't get it back and when you get caught up in the trap of just one mundane thing and the same thing, it creates mental health issues. It creates those issues. So today we want to elevate hood to hooded and continue to push and show up for ourselves.

Speaker 1:

So, we're getting somewhere and I'm excited to even have these goals and to have this mindset and to have community and friends and supporters who show up. So thank you so much. I appreciate it. Amen, yes, have a wonderful evening. You have a wonderful evening as well If you watch this on the replay sending love, hugs, positive vibes.

Speaker 1:

This is Dr Sean and we all the way live. Hey, we all the way live. Hey, we all the way live. Hey, we all the way live. Go stream. My new song. S-t-f-u is my birthday. It is not my birthday, guys. It's the song that I made. So I'm getting like happy birthday every day, but it's just a song that I'm promoting in anticipation for my mixtapes. So I got a lot going on because I'm lit like that.
